American Express (Amex) is stepping firmly into the Web3 era with the launch of a blockchain-integrated travel app, offering card members digital “travel stamps” minted as NFTs. The initiative seeks to blend nostalgia with innovation, creating a seamless and premium travel experience for its users.
Blending Nostalgia and Blockchain
For decades, passport stamps have been treasured keepsakes for global travellers. With many countries phasing out physical stamps, American Express has unveiled a blockchain-based alternative: Ethereum-powered digital stamps. These tokens, minted as ERC-721 NFTs on Coinbase’s Base network, act as a permanent record of international journeys.

Colin Marlowe, VP of Emerging Partnerships at Amex Digital Labs, clarified that these stamps are not speculative assets. “It’s a valueless ERC-721, so technically an NFT, but we just didn’t brand it as such. We wanted to speak to it in a way that was natural for the travel experience itself and so we talk about these things as stamps and they’re represented as tokens,” he explained.
Unlike traditional NFTs, the stamps cannot be traded and do not serve as loyalty points. Instead, they exist solely as a commemorative digital identity layer that enriches the travel experience.
The Amex Travel App: All-in-One Travel Companion
At the heart of the initiative lies the Amex Travel App™, designed as an integrated hub for booking, planning and managing travel. It combines destination guides, planning tools, hotel and flight bookings and even airport lounge services.

An American Express survey revealed that 81% of travellers prefer a single app to connect their vacation inspiration and leisure bookings. By consolidating fragmented services into one platform, Amex is aiming to reduce travel stress while enhancing personalisation.
The app also includes Amex Passport™, where these digital stamps are securely stored. Through this feature, card members can record trips in a novel way, transforming spending and international transactions into digital souvenirs.
Amex Passport: Turning Journeys Into Digital Keepsakes
The “travel stamps” initiative reflects a broader cultural shift in how travellers record memories. Luke Gebb, Executive Vice President at Amex Digital Labs, highlighted the vision:

“Part of the magic of travel is reminiscing about past getaways and commemorative keepsakes are a powerful way for travellers to relive their favourite trips. As physical passport stamps continue to disappear, Amex Passport creates an opportunity for Card Members to celebrate their travels.”
Survey data supports this move: 73% of travellers expressed interest in digital ways of remembering their trips. Amex Passport capitalises on this demand, offering blockchain-secured mementos that are verifiable and enduring. While the NFTs are non-tradable today, Marlowe suggested they could enable “interesting partnership angles” in the future, hinting at potential collaborations with travel brands or cultural institutions.
Fireblocks and Centurion Lounge Enhancements
To deliver this digital-first travel experience, Amex partnered with Fireblocks as its Wallet-as-a-Service provider, ensuring secure storage of these blockchain-based tokens. Fireblocks’ involvement underscores the financial giant’s intent to provide enterprise-grade security and scalability to its card members.
Alongside blockchain integration, Amex has also revamped its Centurion Lounge experience. A new digital waitlist provides real-time updates on lounge capacity and estimated waiting times. This functionality allows travellers to plan more efficiently and avoid unnecessary delays at airports, aligning with Amex’s mission to reduce chaos and enhance premium service.
A Premium Travel Future, Powered by Blockchain
American Express’s latest move positions blockchain not as a speculative tool but as a subtle enabler of customer experience. By focusing on nostalgia, personalisation and seamless integration, Amex differentiates itself from both travel competitors and crypto-native firms.
Crucially, these NFTs are framed as “stamps” rather than digital assets, a deliberate strategy to avoid hype while making blockchain accessible and meaningful to a wider audience. For travellers, it’s a way to immortalise journeys; for Amex, it’s a way to deepen engagement and build loyalty in an increasingly digital-first world.
